Pre-Emergents Explained

When do we apply?

Pre-Emergent herbicides are an incredible way to give season long protection from weeds in your lawn. Imagine you get your normal weed spray service and your lawn stays beautiful and weed free all of the way into the new year!

Applied right at the end of winter, before the soil has warmed up, these fantastic products give up to 6 months of protection from any new weeds growing.

How does it work?

Pre-emergent applications add a coating through the top soil to all of the existing seeds waiting to sprout, preventing them from growing any shoots or roots. This eliminates the entire weed cycle at the beginning, with zero weeds sprouting until the effect has worn off in 6 months.

Germination

Is it safe for new lawns?

If you are doing a complete lawn renovation with grass over seeding you cannot use a pre-emergent until all of the seeds have sprouted, otherwise the application of the product will prevent the new grass from sprouting, along with the weeds. Once the seeds have sprouted you can have it applied immediately.

Is it a selective herbicide?

Pre-emergents are non-selective, meaning that they prevent the growth of all types of plants, even undesirable foreign grasses. When used in combination with selective herbicides that target existing weeds, pre-emergents can eliminate virtually all weeds for up to 6 months. This also means that correct application of pre-emergent can prevent the introduction of different grass breeds onto you lawn via foot traffic.

What is the process?

Applied alone or in conjunction with a weed spray service, its an additional step you can take to keep the spring and summer weeds away all season. Don’t waste your time spot spraying weeds every time they shoot, this year stop them from germinating all together.
